The moment one disembarks from the plane in Thailand there is an instant feeling of calm. The Thai people exude a calmness and gentleness of energy that can be instantly felt in the environment. Of course being on a tropical island tends to exaggerate these feelings of tranquillity. Interestingly, Thailand is one of the only countries never to be involved in a aggressive external war (within recent history). This is largely due to the Buddist philosophy of peace and acceptance, by far the most dominant religion in Thailand.
If Koh Samui seems tropically peaceful then once you arrive in Koh Phangan it steps down another level in calmness. With most of the Island covered by jagged mountains of granite, softened with a lush rainforest canopy, the landscape is a dramatic intersection of mountains cutting into the beach.
Both Islands over the last couple of decades have evolved into a centre point for health spa’s and healing resorts. Whether one wants to book into a 5 star luxury spa, or enjoy an $8.00 massage on the beach this is all readily available.
The retreat we have chosen for Koh Phangan is one on the more remote East side of the island, nestled in the middle of 3 distinctive bays with clear deep water and sandy beaches. A tropical rainforest envelopes the bay area directly behind the beach.
Koh Phangan retreat from the headland
A sense of adventure prevails as access is only available on local Thai boats, about a 10 minute ride from the nearest main town. One can lay back and feel the hustle of modern living recede further into the past as you are overcome by the clear blue waters, incredible rock formations and the towering mountains of vegetation soaring above.
Once in the Bay area there are plenty of local restaurants to discover, all owned by local families with an abundance of fresh seafood or tantalizing vegetarian dishes.
The Retreat itself has a huge range of food to chose from. The menu has been designed to support healthy living and indeed caters for the retreats detox and cleansing programs
The restaurant at the retreat is also the social hub, set right on the beach under a canopy of foliage it is both soothing and vibrant. It attracts an eclectic mix of people from Bankers to Tarot Readers, allowing for an easy interaction with people from all over the world and all walks of life.
A common thread seems to prevails among everyone who is drawn here; to reconnect with parts of themselves that may have been lost in the busy world. The energy of this environment supports transformation, rejuvenation and change.
The retreat offers yoga at least two times per day and evening meditation. There is a massage spa, a steam room and resident western healers that offer a variety of modalities.
We have chosen a well appointed dormitory as the preferred accommodation to keep in the theme of this journey of adventure within a group environment.
