BALI - RETREAT

Ubud, set in the mountains of central Bali, seems a world away from the hustle of Kuta (Bali’s main tourist centre). So picturesque and immaculate it looks like the painted backdrop for a mystical Island paradise. Rice paddies cut into surrounding hillsides lighting up the dense tropical jungle with an intense light green. Volcanoes can be seen coming and going soaring up through the cloud line. Only an hour or so drive from the airport it is like driving back in time to a more simple life based on definitive codes of family and village traditions. Hinduism makes up over 90% of the islands population. For the Balinese there is no distinction between their religion and their daily lives. Life is a spiritual practice for most Balinese, especially in the villages surrounding Ubud. Each family home is its own temple, every occasion is taken for festivities in honour of their gods and their beliefs
Ubud in the last decade has become a spiritual hub for many westerners from all around the world. However rather than detracting from it’s spiritual essence it has merely extended it. Ubud has become a centre for yoga, dance, fine arts and many healing modalities. The central town has evolved into a modern village with lots of boutique shops, restaurants and cafes. Within a few minutes out of town one is quickly surrounded by tropical forest and traditional village living, unchanged much for the last century. The retreat we have chosen is 25 minutes walk from the main town of Ubud, or a AUD $4 taxi ride. It backs onto an endless array of rice paddies with a volcano as a backdrop in the distance. The Gardens within the property are overflowing with abundance and succulence. There are two pools to relax by nestled in this tropical oasis. Two restaurants onsite offer the convenience of traditional Balinese and western style food.
Ubud, Bali
There is plenty to see and do in the surrounding area. Such as the Monkey Forrest in Ubud Village, water temples. More on temples/healer arrange for visits where one can bath in natural spring waters, organic coffee plantations offering a range of exotic teas, coffees and chocolate mixes and the volcanoes all less than one hours drive. The workshop/activities hall is set at the very back of the retreat looking out across the rice paddies with views onto the volcano. All the rooms are generous in size, all set out amongst the exotic gardens. There are many massage spa’s, organic cafe’s and local healers to explore. Or perhaps the boutique shopping for clothes, jewellery and unique ornaments for a fraction of western prices is more your style of relaxation? Most of all, it is the local people that create this magical space. The essence of Hinduism combined with the relaxed island atmosphere creates a deep sense of calmness. Their simplicity, innocence and deeply spiritual natures allow us to feel more connected to our soul journey. It is this energy that gives Ubud its strong force of transformation and change.
